I scoped out the exhibition hall before deciding to assemble my paintings on the floor there. This gave me the first part of the morning to explore more of the city so I went to Independence Plaza then over to the Church of the Annunciation taking the time to soak in the local sights such as children chasing pigeons as elders sat on the stairs on the sunny side of the plaza.
I placed the stretchers and tools in a tote and grabbed my tube of paintings and headed back to the fort. I had plenty of room to spread out my work on the floor and stretched them in the hall. But I should have brought my canvas pliers. I was able to stretch all three pieces adequately, but in my heart I knew that one of them, Arboreal Flyer, had a perfectly atrocious job on it; I don't think it was obvious though. After I got done I started roaming around and looking at the activities of the other inhabitants. There was a lot of assembly and unpacking going on. Along with forklifts, etc. All very industrious and energetic excepting those who had to hurry up and wait for a ladder or some other tool. I talked to several artists, including Jackie Levine who was there with her mother also fussing with 2 stretched canvases, and Susanna Coffey who waited a long time for her crate to appear and then needed a different kind of screwdriver to get it open. Of course after a while I returned to the hotel and took a nap as I was still a bit jet lagged.
I went out after dark in search of an ATM as I found out travelers checks are devilishly hard to cash around here-fortunately ATMs are abundant and I had money in my account. More strolling around gawking. I found an art store and visited Piazza Santa Croce, which had a quasi Bavarian market with strudel, beer tents, wurst, crafts, etc. One place specialized in grilled meats and sausages so it was pretty nice and not too pricey, although that was relative - in old town Florence everything was kind of expensive.
