Last day It was the day and the biennale held the awards ceremony. I figured I didn't win anything as no one had approached me and said, "you need to be at the ceremony." Esther Wertheimer won a life-time achievement award for her bronze sculpture, Marcella Kaspar won the president's award for her giant flowers, Al Wildey took home a cookie for his impressionistic photos on metal, Reinder Ourensma won the top award in painting for his tight moody landscapes. I think Eva Moosbrugger won an award too. There were several awards, but 10 times the number of artists, so obviously many did not win anything including me. I was delighted for all the winners-they were so happy-I didn't even know the gave awards until I was at the Biennale. After ceremony, the day continued to be slow with nonstop announcements by the Biennale that removal of the artwork was forbidden. These announcements continued even as artist after artist snuck out with their wares using the smoking door by me.
Tawera, Lynne and Don invited me to join them for dinner. Marcella was also there. We went to a lovely restaurant but alas their name did not print on the receipt so… It was sprinkling outside and cold. Don and Lynne parted with us as we left the restaurant. Tawera, Marcella and I made our way to the Duomo stopping along the way to get a hot chocolate. Tawera was mad about Florentine cocoa. Marcella's place was somewhere near the Duomo. Tawera and I continued to my hotel; we thought about hitting a vampire museum that seemed to be open, but it was closed.
Tawera narrowly averted disaster this day, figuring out what to do about her Po just hours before the end of the Biennale. Lululoko, a local transplanted artist from the Congo, offered to store the sculpture and show them in January. Tawera sent her art to Italy without a plan to get them home-being giant sculpture-it was a problem. She said the universe will provide and so it did. As for me once back in my hotel I wrote a bunch of notes about traveling to Italy and tips for the next Biennale participants-both lists have been posted as blogs.
