Aspen Study No 2, is acrylic on 9" x 12" loose canvas. Aspen Study No 2, by Jake Beckman, shows a scene of Mt Humphries just after dusk viewed through a stand of aspens illuminated by a campfire.
I have often gone camping in the high country of Arizona, where there is a lot of aspen succession forest; aspens colonize after a fire or other disturbance, growing quickly to cover the forest floor, eventually preventing successor aspens from establishing themselves as the crown of mature trees blocks sunlight from reaching the forest floor. Then pines with more shade tolerance start growing and over take the short-lived aspen trees eventually creating a pine forest where aspens once stood, until the next disturbance comes along and the cycle begins anew. Bark Beetles and drought are bringing the succession to pass once again in the Arizona high country.-Jake
