Son of the Morning 30 inch X 40 inch acrylic on canvas. The gallery wrapped canvas is painted to the exposed edge that it may be hung without a frame. FAR Tag #: 1897 Otter, Son of the Morning, by Jake Beckman, is proudly wearing his father's golden fleece cape and carrying the sun through the solar system, which is laid out on a field of deep blue.

Astronomy has always been a subject I enjoy. Although this story painting is partially based on a Tlinguit myth, I have placed the planets in order, with each planet's orbit define by its own ring within the work. Pluto, which forms nearly a binary system with its moon Charon, cuts across the path across the plane of the ecliptic as it does in reality. I gave economy to the scales in my design; the sun is much larger and the distances in the solar system are much more vast than this painting can convey.-Jake
