Jake Beckman, a study of a pale white Cardon flower visited by a bee, is set
against the blue-green sun blistered ribs of its thorny trunk.
The cactuses growing in the wild around Phoenix are Saguaro, but the local
botanical garden has many specimens of the Cardon, which is somewhat similar to
the Saguaro-only bigger-in fact the Cardon of Mexico is the world's largest
cactus. The neat thing about the Cardon, from a painting aspect is that it
throws out blooms further down its stalk than the Saguaro does-a Saguaro only
sports flowers on its crown. When I paint a Cardon I can depict a flower against
the accordion-like pleats of the cactus, which I thought made a more interesting
painting. The Cardon like the Saguaro, is a night blooming cactus.- Jake
