After the Late Snowfall, by Jake Beckman, is a 30" x 40"
acrylic on stretched canvas. FAR Tag
1904. After the Late Snowfall shows a desert landscape at night
in blue, green, purple, and white. The desert floor, saguaros and other plants
dusted by snow played against a starscape. There is a single saguaro bloom.
Saguaros grow wild in the desert around here; they really do exist outside
of westerns, but only in the Sonoran desert. Although Phoenix never gets
snow that sticks, the outlying areas occasionally do. In fact in 2006 we had a very late
snowfall, I think it was near the end of March. I drove out on a Sunday morning
to hike and have a look around as it was one of the most spectacular snowfalls I
had seen since moving to the valley of the sun. The mountains ringing Phoenix
were all dusted in white and it was incredibly beautiful. Anyway the idea for
this painting came from one of these rare events.-Jake
