Rock Star is a primitive painting with distressed blue,
black, and brown pumice and gesso ground; an archetypal white swirl and sun are
lightly carved into the gesso, then reddish brown thunderbirds and a hand are
layered on to convey the passage of time, implying hands through the ages have
created this work.
The sun symbol was the wheel behind this work. I carved in spots to imply
other stars and that got me going in the night sky direction. The positive and
negative bird stencils just came to me. But pretty early on I knew what the name
of this work was going to be; it's an irresistible play on words.-Jake
