Lizard Queen is acrylic on 24" x 18" loose canvas.
Lizard Queen, by Jake Beckman, is a work with a primitive motif in distressed green,
blue, and brown pumice and gesso ground; an archetypal white spotted lizard is
lightly carved into the gesso, then a black snakes, a black lizard and a hand
are layered on to convey the passage of time, implying hands through the ages
have created this work.
Living in the desert became the inspiration behind the creatures in this
work. The turquoise and copper colors are very Arizona feeling to me. Although
birds and ground rats of all varieties are prevalent even in the desert,
reptiles are also strongly represented. I was going for a sort of Gila monster
effect with the petroglyph in this work.-Jake
