Clouds Framed 18 inch X 24 inch acrylic on loose canvas. FAR Tag # : 1874. Clouds is a primitive painting with distressed brown, green, yellow, orange pumice and gesso ground; archetypal white swirls are lightly carved into the gesso, then stenciled palm trees and a hand are layered on to convey the passage of time, implying hands through the ages have created this work.

Clouds is the very first painting I created in the Graffiti Series. The Graffiti series has a lot of unplanned moments in general. I generally let the painting go where it wants to even as I lay out and carve the ground. The hand in this one seemed so appropriate so it appears in every one of the graffiti paintings. I wanted a kind of skyward view here, with palm trees, but that thought of the palm tree stencil did not occur until after the swirling carved lines and runny base coat had been applied.-Jake
